Teacher Workshop To Explore German-Russian Immigration to North Dakota

The State Historical Society of North Dakota is offering a free teacher workshop, “E Pluribus Unum: Immigration History and the Impact of German-Russian Immigrants to North Dakota,” July 24-27 at the North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum in Bismarck. The workshop will include visits to the State Archives, Welk Homestead State Historic Site, and stops along the German-Russian Country Talking Trail. Teachers of all grade levels will walk away with content and lessons for the upcoming school year. Graduate credit is available for a fee. Registration is required at forms.office.com/g/NWRcFQgTYV. Participants will explore the immigration of Euro-Americans to North Dakota, with a specific focus on German-Russian immigrants, and learn about the push/pull factors that brought people here, the cultures they brought with them, and the connections between past and modern immigration. The workshop will equip teachers to deliver ND Studies curriculum, conduct National History Day competitions in schools, and effectively teach with primary resources. In addition, learning opportunities at state historic sites and museums will be addressed. Participants will learn from experts including State Historical Society staff and Michael Miller, emeritus director of the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection at North Dakota State University. This workshop is funded by a grant from the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) program. Content created and featured in partnership with the TPS program does not indicate an endorsement by the Library of Congress.
