Paper Airplane Crafting Planned at Camp Hancock State Historic Site

- Children are invited to "Paper Airplane Crafting" on June 21 at 1 p.m. at Camp Hancock State Historic Site. Staff will help children make simple airplanes using provided materials. The staff will also help fly the airplanes and discuss how wind carries them. Instruction will provided for building a fast plane, a stunt plane, or a glider. The workshop is free and refreshments will be provided. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Originally built as an army post, Camp Hancock buildings became the U.S. Weather Bureau station offices and director's residence from 1894 to 1940. This program celebrates Camp Hancock’s role in forecasting weather patterns, which impact crop choices, airplane travel routes, and reservoir water levels. Camp Hancock is home to the oldest standing building in Bismarck and has the oldest standing church in North Dakota as well as a 1909 locomotive engine. This state historic site is managed by the State Historical Society of North Dakota and located at 101 E. Main Ave. Summer hours are Friday through Sunday, 1-5 p.m.
